The Vixen Diaries:
Book Review  Kam Williams

The Vixen Diaries

“From the night we met in April 2005, I knew he was the one for me and that I would love him all the remaining days of my life. Our relationship was as close to perfect as one could have. He did all he could to please me, but I was ungrateful.

Our differences in age and culture never seemed to matter until I realized how poorly trained and inexperienced I was in the art of relationships… He is the love of my life, and I know that no matter where we are or who we’re with, our hearts are joined.”

When Confessions of a Video Vixen was published a couple of years ago, Karrine Steffans wasn’t at all hesitant about revealing the identities of the A-list celebrities, many of whom were married, she had slept with while working in Hollywood as a dancer in gangsta rap videos. That compelling kiss-and-tell memoir proved to be well worth its weight in gold as a cautionary tale for any naive young females thinking about taking a shot at showbiz. The single-mom’s eye-opening page-turner recounted a frightful spiral to the depths of despair and ended with an optimistic postscript about her subsequent recovery and redemption.

Unfortunately, The Vixen Diaries fails to measure up to Steffans’ first book, as she is apparently no longer inclined to dish the dirt, if she has any dirt to dish. So, although she’s remains a shameless namedropper, virtually each entry is accompanied by a denial of any romantic liaison.

Comparing herself to Flava Flav, an equally-notorious character curiously capable of countless sexual conquests, Karrine claims that her recent suitors have included Halle Berry’s ex-husband Eric Benet, Jamie Foxx, Dennis Rodman and Bobby Brown, to name a few. But while they might have had the hots for her, she apparently is saving herself with hopes of reconciling with her ex-boyfriend, comedian Bill Maher.

Here’s what she does have to say about some of her platonic pals:

On Eric Benet: “The things he shared with me will remain private… I never found Eric sexy.”

On Bobby Brown: “I don’t expect people to believe me, but Bobby Brown and I never had sex when he was here…He had erection issues.”

On Chris Rock: “For the record, Chris and I have spent time together… though none of those moments have ever been romantic or sexual.”

On Dennis Rodman: “This man is an absolute nut… He told me that he actually was in the mood to wear a dress… He invited me out with him and I refused.”

On Eddie Murphy: “ [He’s] been linked to me in intimate ways, and I’m delighted to report that it’s all rubbish.”

So, the woman who once referred to herself as “Superhead” seems determined to distance herself from a status staked on fellating the famous. Yet, it’s also clear that she has sadly slipped back into some of her self-destructive ways, as she admits to sleeping with a series of losers lately. This, in turn, led to her attempting suicide, being institutionalized and losing custody of her eight year-old son to the foster care system temporarily.

Thus, when all is said and done, it’s a little hard to believe Karrine when she asserts, “The fact is I’ve changed since the stories in Confessions were a reality in my life… I cannot write the same book again, because I am evolving into a different person.” The wild and wanton behavior she describes hasn’t changed all that much, except she’s just hanging with Average Joes and has-beens instead of celebs anybody cares about.

Clearly, she’s pining away for Bill Maher, whom she admits to abandoning ill-advisedly out of boredom because she craved the insanity and depravity of her former hip-hop lifestyle. In sum, while revealing its emotionally-vulnerable author as still unstable, The Vixen Diaries is otherwise a 200-page plaintive cry for help that ostensibly only Mr. Maher can answer.

Book Review: By Loo Oates
A Black Cop In The South
Highly Recommended

I haven't done a book review in a couple years, to busy or to old to concentrate on the little details that goes into dissecting someone's literary work. When I picked up this book, and read the first few pages, my political juices start to flow, because I realized the author and I grew up just a few miles apart and we knew the same people in our community. The riveting sensational dynamics of our childhood pales with each other, I could identify with him losing his father at an early age.

This book is a must read for anyone who ever had desires and dreams, lived or had relatives in the south. It is a motivational essay which our kids could really use. It touches on the human fragilities of an old white police chief in his hometown and his influence on young Ron. The high school years is spell binding for me, because I remember that era so well.

The many ballplayers or cops he talked about, I knew,  played with, or played against at sometime in my baseball career and to this day, tall tales and truths are spun about the legends Ron Rawling ran with. Despite the many pitfalls, Ron made his dreams com true, with the help of mentors, and a strong, Black, positive mother.

His ongoing quest for education and achievement is astonishing. His tenacity to rise above it all shows the strength of him and  his mother's influence in allowing him to realize his dreams. I don't want to go to deep into this book, because I will spoil the enjoyment and pride you will get from reading this it. I suggest you curl up around the fireplace, or the comforts of your home and read this book.

Black cops like Ron Rawling do us proud in their quest to dispatch justice in a fair and equal, human manner. Buy this book for a holiday present for a young person and insist they read it, because the historical facts and times is something we shouldn't ever forget.

Today, Ron Rawling is doing what he does best, helping people as the Chief of Police of Fremont, NC and I saw him in real action a month ago, mentoring young boys at a community affair  honoring community leaders. He didn't just show up, he bought 6 young black boys along to show them the way, exposing them to things that wasn't possible during his childhood. Get this Book and get it now.

Pimping and Stripping
As the sun rose slowly on Durham's Lake, the sirens permeated the air and Trisha could hear the sounds getting closer and closer before she blanked out on the pier of this once thriving lake. She could barely hear the voices of the rescue squad members because she had this stabbing pain in her side. As they approached, she heard a strong voice, asking her what was wrong. The sunshine blazed through the windows of room 203 of the  county medical center where Trisha had been taken by her rescuers. She remembers her mama screaming what happened to my child, but the medication sent her off in a sullen state of oblivion and she fell into a deep sleep amidst the noise and chatter in the background. Trisha Korney was borned into this quite community situated in the eastern part of north carolina with it's claim to fame being in the tripod of the last major battle of the civil war, still reeling in the eyes of the local folks as the war of northern aggression. more
